Name Our Lane
Name Our Lane
Our laneway is just as important to our daily lives as Lisgar Street and Dovercourt Road.
We think it deserves a name.
We propose naming our local laneway after an exceptional person who may have been
overlooked in the past. Let’s celebrate a local hero or notable person.
We will compile the naming suggestions and circulate the responses for community voting by the end of June.
Laneway Name Suggestions from Community Members:
River Lane
An indigenous name/person
Lorne Lane
Lady Lisgar Lane
LizDover Lane
Magnolia Lane
Lilac Lane
Aunty Ali Lane
Ursula Franklin Lane

The City of Toronto is encouraging neighbourhoods to have laneways named for the following reasons:
Improving Safety
Having a named lane makes it easier for police, fire and paramedics to respond in an emergency.
Creating Community
The act of coming together to select a name will help the neighbourhood to identify a local hero who may have been overlooked.
Neighbourhood Identity
Celebrating and building connections after over a year of fewer social connections.
Laneway Improvements
Names create opportunities for improvements to lighting and city maintenance.
A Vibrant Place
We already gather here as a community, but next time we can say, meet me in, “ - - - - - Lane” instead of, “the laneway behind my home, south of Argyle Street, east of Lisgar Street and west of Dovercourt Rd.”
Kilogram Studio has its roots in Little Portugal and Beaconsfield Village.
Our rear lanes are busy places to gather, learn how to ride a bike (regardless of age), go for a socially distanced walk with friends, talk to neighbours, and a place to take out your garbage, recycling, organics on Monday evenings.
Some of us spend a good portion of our days in our garages, working our cars, bikes, working from home, or working out in home gyms. Some of us host dinner parties in our garages, while others’ garages are simply a place where that spring cleaning project never really gets off the ground.
