Unfolded Box
Unfolded Box
for Migrating Landscapes
The installation was in participation with Migrating Landscapes at the 2012 Venice Biennale. It is a reflection on experiences of continual migration. It addresses the first moment of rest upon arrival in a new place. The object is scaled to the human body and derives its form from a box or piece of luggage.
The box is unfolded to create a place of rest. Each surface is made of many hinged components which allow it to conform to the landscape and support itself. If migration occurred again and the box were to be removed and placed onto another landscape, it would serve the same function, however it would bear a new form by creating a new interaction.
The experience of designing, fabricating and installing the piece is juxtaposed with the personal migration experience that inspired its content.
Unfolded Box is based on the team’s perpetual migration, reflected in this piece through the reciprocal relation between the object and landscape.
